Join us for the inaugural Homecoming Reflexive Writing Workshop: Emory Meaning and Memory Making. We want to hear from you! What lasting memories come to mind when you reflect on your years at Emory? What experiences of college life at your alma mater are most meaningful to you? What sentiments and relationships inspire your return to campus?

This workshop will provide an opportunity for you to reflect on your own college to career journey and what being part of the Emory community means to you. Led by two faculty facilitators and their former student (alumna and long-time staff member), this workshop creates a space for you to reflect and emerge with deeper understandings about your experiences. We will integrate conceptual frameworks and provide short reflection prompts for everyone to think about.

For many alumni, when you step foot back on the Quad or inside the academic building that housed all your classes, a flood of memories ensue. For those undergraduates who lived on campus, Dooley's Ball and Songfest dominate the sights, smells, and sounds of our alma mater. For graduate students, you may have experienced how academic disciplines and research connected to communities of practice both within and outside academia. When visiting campus, circles of former classmates are in town to connect, and you may run into familiar faces from decades ago. Perhaps your time at Emory was also full of challenges, from personal growth to academic and research angst to ambiguity of what pathway lies ahead. For many current students, you are living these experiences in real time. Whether you are aware of this or not, you are now part of an engaged, broader community of Emory alumni. These relationships have the potential to last a lifetime. Come explore memories and what they mean to you with other members of the Emory community.

No prior writing experience is required. Workshop is open to alumni, undergraduate juniors and seniors, and graduate students from all schools, divisions, and academic degree programs. Staff and administrators are also welcome to attend.

Reception with light appetizers will follow.

Salaat Ul-Jumah also known as Friday prayers will be held in the sanctuary of Cannon Chapel. It is a congregational prayer that is established on the blessed day of Friday and is a highlight of the week for many in the Emory Muslim community. It is followed by a communal celebration over conversation and refreshments. 

Since 1905, the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing (NHWSN) has evolved from a small training program in a 50-bed hospital to an internationally renowned school that now enrolls more than 1,000 baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral students each year. The School of Nursing is expanding its footprint with the Emory Nursing Learning Center (ENLC), a 70,000-square-feet renovation in Decatur, Ga. The $20.6 million expansion boasts a state-of-the-art simulation and skills lab, which will provide experiential and immersive learning for students, and the Emory Nursing Experience, a program for continuing professional education in partnership with Emory Healthcare nursing.

Parents and families are invited to take an exclusive tour of the Carlos Museum’s special exhibition, “Picture Worlds: Greek, Maya, and Moche Pottery.” The tours will last an hour and will be led by a museum student ambassador. Learn more about the exhibition, Carlos Museum, and how students can engage with the museum throughout the year.

The 2020 election highlighted two sides of election administration in the U.S.: the hard work of local election officials to conduct accurate and secure elections on meager budgets, and the intense partisan rancor of how elections should properly be conducted. Join us to learn from Emory experts Bernard Fraga and Charles Stewart 79C how the continued adaptation of election laws and practices, and political pressures, can provide insights on what to expect once the polls close on November 5.

About the speakers:

Bernard L. Fraga is an associate professor in the Department of Political Science and faculty coordinator of the Latinx Studies Initiative at Emory University. He studies American elections, focusing on racial/ethnic politics, voter turnout, and the impact of election laws on voters and politicians. His research has been published in leading journals including the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, Journal of Politics, British Journal of Political Science, Political Behavior, Electoral Studies, Political Research Quarterly, Politics, Groups, and Identities, Journal of Race, Ethnicity, and Politics, and the Stanford Law Review. Findings from Fraga’s work have been featured in various media outlets including the New York Times, Washington Post, National Public Radio, CNN, and The Economist. Fraga’s research has been supported by the Carnegie Corporation, National Science Foundation, the Social Science Research Council, the Mellon Foundation, and various academic institutions. He received his B.A. in Political Science and Linguistics from Stanford University and Ph.D. in Government and Social Policy from Harvard University.

Charles Stewart III is the Kenan Sahin Distinguished Professor of Political Science at MIT, where he has taught since 1985, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His research and teaching areas include American politics congressional politics, elections, and American political development. Professor Stewart is an established leader in the analysis of the performance of election systems and the quantitative assessment of election performance. Since 2001, Professor Stewart has been a member and director of the Caltech/MIT Voting Technology Project, a leading research effort that applies scientific analysis to questions about election technology, election administration, and election reform. His research has been funded by Pew, the Democracy Fund, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the Election Trust Initiative, and received by the Presidential Commission on Election Administration. He received degrees in political science from Emory University (BA, 1979) and Stanford University (AM ,1981; PhD, 1985) and attended Yale Divinity School from 1979 to 1980.

Emory Hindu Life and the Hindu Students Association warmly invites alumni and families to join us for weekly Aarti on Friday, October 25. Aarti is a form of worship in which a lamp, typically an oil lamp, is circled around a symbol, image, or deity while singing prayers of veneration. Join us for an evening of community, conversation and chai. 

Dr. Sarah Febres-Cordero, faculty member of the School of Nursing, and sequential artist Joseph Karg, Assistant Professor of Illustration and Sequential Art, Kennesaw State University, along with additional guests, will present a moderated discussion about their graphic novel "Staying Alive in Little Five." The conversation will focus on Febres-Cordero's research and experiences in place-based overdose recognition and response, as well as Karg's visual approach to bringing these experiences to life.

The discussion will be followed by a reception in the Woodruff Health Sciences Center Library from 6:45 to 7:30 pm and a hands-on naloxone (Narcan) demonstration from 7:30 to 8:30 pm. The naloxone demonstration is limited to 25 participants and requires a separate registration.

It’s time to make plans for your 50th class reunion in October. To honor the last cohort to attend law classes in Carlos Hall, we've arranged a special Friday evening event at the museum with dinner and cocktails!

Hosted by Emory Recreation & Wellness and the Office of Parent and Family Programs, the annual Homcoming and Family Weekend 5K walk/run begins outside the Student Activity & Academic Center and winds through Lullwater Park. Participants are encouraged to register online in advance, but walk ups are also welcome. There is no fee for Emory University students, faculty/staff, alumni, friends, and families. Prizes will be awarded to male and female winners in 5 age groups (21 and under, 22-29, 30-39, 40-49, and 50 and up). Bagels and coffee will be served.

On Saturday, Dean Richard Freer will share his vision for the law school's next five years. Emory Provost Ravi Bellamkonda will join us to present on the state of the university. We'll conclude with an alumni panel that explores the diverse career trajectories and accomplishments of Luther Battiste 74L, Warren Black 74L, Alice Fried Martell 74L, and Gordon Giffin (moderator: Mike Elsberry 74L), followed by a luncheon.

The planetarium, one of the key features of Emory's Mathematics and Science Center, is a 56-seat classroom space designed for teaching undergraduate astronomy and hosting events and seasonal programs that explore and celebrate the cosmos. In collaboration with the Department of Physics and the Office of Parent and Family Programs, we invite you and your family to enjoy a free, 20-minute Planetarium show!

Visit the Michael C. Carlos Museum during Homecoming to experience the permanent collection and two special, temporary exhibitions. Docents will be in the galleries to answer your questions and offer information from 12 to 2 pm. Museum admission is free for Emory alumni and families throughout Homecoming weekend. Special exhibitions include artwork by La Vaughn Bell called Come Ruin or Rapture in the Howett Works on Paper Gallery, and Picture Worlds: Greek, Maya, and Moche Pottery which examines the Greeks in the Mediterranean, the Maya in Central America, and the Moche of northern Peru as each stand out for their terracotta vessels enlivened with narrative imagery. Photographer and multimedia artist Royce Soble, whose work documents Atlanta’s LGBTQ+ community and arts scene in the 1990s, will be in conversation with Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library Curator of Political, Cultural, and Social Movements, Randy Gue. Soble’s photographs, journals, and other digital materials are archived in the Rose Library’s collections.

Your 15-time National Champion Swim & Dive team will be taking on University of the South at 1 pm at the Woodruff PE Center.
