Marvin Arrington, Sr. 67L was one of Atlanta’s most significant political leaders, yet one of its least recognized. He grew up to help galvanize the city of his birth into the international, cosmopolitan metropolis that it is today. Join the journey of one man's love for a city, and vision for transformation.
We hope that you join us to honor and recognize an incredible man by celebrating his legacy and watching his story. Guests are encouraged to arrive at 6:30 PM to connect and grab a seat before the screening begins. The screening will begin promptly at 7:30 PM, followed by a 30-minute Q&A at 9:30 PM.
About Marvin Arrington, Sr. 67L
The Honorable Marvin Arrington, Sr. attended Clark College (now Clark Atlanta University) on a football scholarship. He graduated from Clark in 1963 with a bachelor of arts degree in sociology and was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. In 1964, he began his legal studies at Howard University, but transferred to Emory University School of Law after his first year, becoming one of the first two Black students to attend the Emory University Law School full-time. He graduated with his juris doctor degree from Emory in 1967. Judge Arrington was elected to the Atlanta Board of Alderman (now called the Atlanta City Council) in 1969 and served as president for 17 years. In 2002, former Governor Roy Barnes appointed Arrington to the Fulton County Superior Court, where he served until is retirement in 2012. Judge Arrington's accolades include the Georgia Bar Association's highest community service award, the "Chief Justice Robert Benham Award," and recognition as one of Georgia Trend Magazine's "Legal Elite." He has also been voted one Atlanta Magazine's "Top 25 Lawyers." In May 2019, The Atlanta City Hall renamed its council chambers after him.

Enjoy a stroll around the historic core of the campus as the history of Emory in Druid Hills unfolds through buildings, statues, trees, and green spaces. About the tour guide, Gary Hauk: A writer, editor, ethicist, and historian, Hauk served in the President’s Office of Emory University for more than thirty years as vice president and secretary of the University and later as deputy and then senior adviser to the president. He retired from Emory in January 2020 but continues his work with CSLR in a consultant capacity. In addition to his administrative work, Hauk served for many years as the unofficial historian of Emory and was appointed in 2015 as the university’s first official historian. He has authored four books about Emory, including, most recently, Emory as Place: Meaning in a University Landscape, published by the University of Georgia Press. Hauk has a PhD in ethics and society from the Laney Graduate School at Emory. He earned his BA and MA degrees in English literature from Lehigh University and a divinity degree from the Methodist Theological School in Ohio.
