Saturday, November 19,
9 a.m. -
11 a.m. Central
Buena Vista Elementary School
more information
One in seven, or 11 million, children in America live in households without consistent access to adequate food. These kids rely on free breakfast and lunch at school, but when weekends, school holidays, and summer breaks occur, they are often without much, if any, food. This is where the Homeless Education Resource Office (HERO) program comes in. There are over 3,500 children in Nashville who are experiencing homelessness and rely mostly on their school’s free breakfast and lunch. These students are served in myriad ways by the HERO program, including individual advocacy, school transportation assistance, housing referrals and basic needs such as hygiene products, school uniforms, new socks and underwear, school supplies and shoes.
This Thanksgiving Break, the HERO program, in connection with Metro Nashville Public Schools, is providing Thanksgiving meals to 50 HERO families who aren’t in a shelter or other location where they’ll have access to a meal. Our role in this is to assemble snack bags to be delivered alongside the Thanksgiving Meal Boxes. This will be food that will help fill in the gaps for these kids to have on the five-day Thanksgiving school break.
Join us on Sat, Nov 19th from 9-11am to help compile these snack bags for the families and help with other needed projects for these kids. We will gather at the HERO program site Buena Vista Elementary School at 1531 Ninth Ave. North Nashville, TN 37208. If you are able to donate any of the below fresh food items, that is greatly appreciated:
- 32 oz Parmalat Shelf Stable Milk (doesn’t matter if it is whole, or low/non fat, we would love to have 2-4 cartons of milk per 50 families; 4=1 gallon)
- Apples,Oranges,Pears (any fresh fruit that lasts a little while, we would love to have a dozen pieces of fruit for each of the 50 bags)
- Loaves of Bread (any kind is fine, we would love to have 2 loaves for each of the 50 bags)
- You can also donate via this Amazon wishlist: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/DIES1SGJZLOU?ref_=wl_share and purchase food that will be used to fill these snack bags that will be delivered alongside the Thanksgiving Meals to these families.
Thank you so much for your support and care for this very important Nashville project!

Join the Emory Baltimore Alumni Network as we kick off the holiday season by giving back to our community. Join local alumni as we volunteer with St. Vincent De Paul Baltimore's Adopt-a-Family Program. Each year, Vincent's generous donors receive wish lists from families that cannot afford to supply Christmas gifts for their loved ones. Our volunteers will be helping Vincent staff keep the donations organized and documented so each family gets the correct ones. Just a few hours of your day will make a lifelong impact on the families. We hope you can join us!
