Schedule of Events

Traditionally, Emory Cares organizes local, hands-on volunteerism in support of organizations around the world. This year, Emory Cares is doing one project that's a bit different; we're calling for our community to support those recovering from Hurricanes Helene and Milton.  We know alumni in the affected communities are working as hard as they can to rebuild and repair in Asheville, in Tampa Bay and in Southeast Georgia.

Please join the Emory Alumni Association and Emory Community in supporting their efforts, by supporting the organizations below.  Each organization works locally to ensure much needed supplies and funds are available for the long road to recovery ahead.

Southeast Georgia's agriculture community was hard hit, with farmers losing near-harvest crops like pecans, and losing future crops when orchards were devastated by winds and flooding. Tampa Bay's Metropolitan Ministries, led by Emory's own Molly James (89C) is providing water, food and shelter to those in need across Tampa Bay. They're serving hot meals in more than 40 locations across the community as the area responds to back-to-back hurricanes. Your involvement helps local organizations support local needs. Watching news coverage and hearing the first hand accounts of friends and family members who've lost so much is hard. It can make us feel helpless to watch from afar and not be able to lend a hand.

Bread Coffeehouse supports the Eagle Food Pantry to serve Emory students experiencing food insecurity. This year alone, they have more than 700 visits, more than triple our previous year and we need YOUR help to restock so we can continue serving them in the year ahead.

Help EPD replenish its Care Kits by donating toiletries, socks, small backpacks, and other items for individuals experiencing homelessness. EPD provides services to the Atlanta, Oxford, and Midtown campuses and their adjacent areas every day of the year.

Our officers often encounter people who need basic hygiene and personal care items, socks, beanies, gloves, and backpacks (new or used).

The Golden Seeds Fashion Show is designed to promote mental health and wellness among seniors in our community. This event will not only showcase creative fashion but also serve as a platform to foster connections and uplift the spirits of our senior participants. We believe that the arts can play a significant role in enhancing mental well-being, and we are eager to create a memorable experience for everyone involved. To make this event successful, we are reaching out to Emory University for volunteers who share our passion for community service and mental health advocacy. We are looking for enthusiastic individuals to assist with various roles, including event setup, model coordination, audience engagement, and more.

The Boston Network of the Emory Alumni Association is once again partnering with local bookstore warehouse More Than Words on November 1st!

More Than Words works with youth who are in the foster care system, court-involved, homeless, out of school, parenting, or involved with the Department of Mental Health. These young people are employed by More Than Words to build skills and self-efficacy.

Our Emory Cares volunteers will work alongside these young people, and will participate in a youth led tour, ice breaker, volunteer activities, and check-out process.

Join the Emory Community in Central Florida to help with seeding, planting, and harvesting food that will be sent to local students in Parramore and the surrounding areas through a free pantry program with 4 local schools

The Atlanta Community Food Bank’s Community Food Center is a direct distribution food pantry to help us meet the need in food insecure areas. Volunteers will help us package and distribute food to the Stone Mountain community.

Volunteers will assist with distribution day and keep the distribution food pantry cleaned and stocked. This shift will consist of a multitude of tasks including restocking shelves, assisting neighbors with finding food, bagging groceries, packaging boxes of non-perishables or bags of produce and other food items for distribution at a later date, unloading food donations from trucks and vans and unpacking those items, daily cleaning, and working in the fridge and freezer to restock those items. Volunteers may also be trained to use a manual pallet jack to help move pallets.

Suggested Attire: Closed-toe and closed-heel shoes are required, with sneakers or work boots recommended. Flip flops, sandals or heeled shoes are not allowed. Please wear comfortable clothing which you do not mind getting a bit rumpled.

Minimum Age:  Age 8 and up are accepted as volunteers.  Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult chaperone. Chaperones must be present throughout the entire shift and volunteer alongside the youth

Join the Emory Community in crocheting small bouquets to be delivered to Emory cancer units for patients or those in chemotherapy.  Cancer patients are not allowed flowers in their recovery and chemotherapy spaces, due to the fact that flowers and plants carry can carry bacteria and pollens.

Many cancer patients have lowered immune system due to chemotherapy and cancer and real flowers can carry an increased risk of infection.

The Emory Community is invited to support the LaGrange area in two different ways this fall. 

BLOOD DONORS:  Blood donors are needed in areas unaffected by the recent hurricanes.  The Emory Cares Blood Drive will be held in partnership with LifeSouth Community Blood Centers.  There will be a mobile blood unit in the parking lot of the the Emory Clark-Holder Clinic, located at 303 Smith Street.  Minimum age for blood donation is 18.

The Office of Transformative Clinical Practice at the School of Nursing at Emory will lead a campaign to collect hats and scarves for breast cancer patients and to bring a treat to the nurses at cancer center at the Emory Main Hospital/Winship, to thank them for their services. Agape is thrilled to host the 5K RUN 4 LOVE this year as an in-person event throughout Atlanta’s amazing Piedmont Park. Hundreds of walkers and runners will participate to enlighten the next generation of leaders.

The Run 4 Love will raise awareness about Agape’s mission to empower and support under-served families to discover, embrace, and achieve their full potential.

Together we will pound the pavement for 5 miles with mothers, daughters, fathers, sons, mentors, mentees, and friends walking to “End Generational Poverty in our Community One child at a time, One Step at a Time.”

The mission of HouseProud is to provide no-cost home repairs for seniors and veteran homeowners, keeping them warm, safe, and dry.  Join your Emory Veterans community in completing a home repair for a veteran. 

HouseProud happily accepts all volunteers, novice or skilled! Our volunteers perform everything from roofing to flooring. Please let us know your skill-set and we will eagerly accommodate your interest level. Individuals with little to no repair skills can learn to make repairs. Our staff will gladly teach and/or train individuals that are interested in more in-depth repair work. Individuals with tool and home repair knowledge are heavily utilized to provide quality repairs for our seniors.  All tools and materials are provided along with HouseProud staff support.

Piney Grove Cemetery is considered the last remaining historic landmark of Piney Grove, the former African-American community or settlement located in Buckhead that may date back as far as the mid-1820s. Piney Grove Cemetery, located on Canterbury Road, is a rare and intact example of an historic African-American cemetery, one of the earliest in Buckhead. Piney Grove Cemetery holds over 300 graves, some of which are believed to be slave burials. Join the Emory Community and Friends of Piney Grove Cemetery to clear brush, weeds and other debris in this historical cemetery.

Herbert Taylor & Daniel Johnson Parks, Morningside's green oasis, offer walking trails, wildlife, and a serene escape from city life. These 34-acre parks, once home to the Muscogee, are now a peaceful retreat for residents and visitors alike.  Join the Friends of Herbert Taylor Park to restore native habitat in this park and help with invasive species removal.

Join your Emory friends and volunteer to help beautify a local community garden. Volunteers may participate in tasks such as watering, weeding, planting, or harvesting items for the community garden. The Stone Mountain Community Garden (SMCG) was founded in 2009 and has been at its current location since 2011. The SMCG consists of over 50 individual garden plots which are 4-feet by 12-feet in size, composting sites, herb garden, wildflower patch, children’s garden, bee colony, vertical garden, food pantry garden, and an information kiosk. The food pantry garden is managed by our Master Gardener partners and volunteers. All produce grown in this area are then donated to the local food pantry.

We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers at the Clarkston Community Health Center (CCHC) to help create a beautiful outdoor space around our facility. By joining us, you'll be part of a gardening initiative that fosters a sense of community and teamwork. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about gardening techniques, plant care, and the nutritional benefits of what we grow. We’ll also discuss the importance of using native plants and how they contribute to both community health and our own well-being.

Come improve the lives of our furry friends! We have many adult dogs and cats, puppies and kittens that will benefit from the time and love you can give them. Help is greatly needed with walking, socializing and playing with animals. Each volunteer plays a vital role in the success of this understaffed shelter that cares for nearly 2,000 animals each year. Volunteers of all levels of experience are welcomed. Come join us for a fun and impactful Saturday morning!

The Oxford Athletic Department will assist the Oxford Science department in removing invasive species in the Oxford forest.

Note: Please meet at the Oxford Student Center and we will move as a group to the final location, which is within walking distance of the Oxford Campus.

Join the Oxford Community to support children in Newton County Foster Care.  This project for Oxford is providing foster children with donated items that will help transition them into foster homes.

Last year Oxford College, with the help of the Newton County Department of Family and Children Services, collected and made packages of personal items for over 150 children in Newton County.

The Emory APIDA (Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American) Alumni Network will help with sorting and organizing clothing and household items at Inspiritus.

The clothing closet is visited by refugee families. Your service improves the experience for refugee shoppers, making it easier for them to find the items they need, and helps them save money as they reestablish their lives.

Feeding Hong Kong is a Hong Kong registered charity with a mission to fight hunger and reduce the amount of quality food being sent to landfills. They serve as the link between food companies with surplus and charities with need. They collect, sort, store and redistribute surplus food to charities running food assistance programmes, and also raise awareness about food insecurity, food waste and food banking. They are Hong Kong’s sole accredited member of the Global Food Banking Network, an international organisation dedicated to creating and strengthening food banks and national food bank networks. Emory volunteers will go to their warehouse for a morning of community service by unloading, sorting, and packing food before the organization redistributing to charities in Hong Kong.

Emory Alumni of the DC-area are excited to partner with the Boy Scouts of Arlington and the Arlington Food Assistance Center for Scouting for Food, the organizations' largest food drive for the year. AFAC serves food to over 2,200 families every week. Emory will help sort out the truckloads of donated food that the Boy Scouts source throughout Arlington during the entire week prior. Join Emory Cares - Gainesville and the Alachua Conservation Trust (ACT) for a Saturday morning invasive plant cleanup, and get a Free T-shirt. 

We’ll root out Caesar's weed to make room for important plant species to thrive. You do not have to be affiliated with Emory to participate.

There is no minimum age for this event, but we ask that all participants under 18 be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

All participants will be asked to complete the Alachua Conservation Trust Waiver of Liability, which will be available onsite.

While at the preserve you might catch a glimpse of some wildlife, including bald eagle, swallow-tailed kite, red-headed woodpecker, northern bobwhite, wild turkey, gopher tortoise, American alligator, golden mouse, river otter, and Florida black bear. There is also great floral diversity within the preserve’s boundary, with aquatic plants such as blue-flag iris, water lilies, lotus, pickerel weed and lizard's tail in showy blossom in the spring.

Prairie Creek Preserve and the surrounding 1,150 acres were purchased by ACT between 2005 and 2015. Over 500 acres were then added to Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, while another 96 acres were added to Alachua County Forever’s Conservation Lands Program. The remainder comprises Prairie Creek Preserve, a 606-acre nature preserve that includes Prairie Creek Conservation Cemetery, a natural burial ground that also conserves land. Prairie Creek drains Newnans Lake, one of the largest lakes in north Florida, towards Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park and Orange Lake. The upland areas of the preserve are made up of flatwoods, mesic and hydric hammocks, and wetlands that include cypress swamps, depression marshes, and blackwater streams. The basin provides a corridor along an important flyway through this part of the state.

Join the Emory Young Families Network to help plant 60 trees in Dunwoody Nature Center to help sustain our urban forest. These trees will provide cleaner air, cool shade, and all around improved habitat for humans and wildlife living in our community.

Planting tasks include digging holes with shovels/mattocks, untangling roots with your hands, mulching, watering, and cleaning up your area. Physical activity such as bending, lifting, and kneeling is required.

Tree planting can be physically strenuous - be ready to break a sweat and get dirty! This is a kid-friendly project!

Madison Forsythe 26Ox 28C conducted a statistical analysis of the factors that negatively impact mental health and found that depression and lack of motivation are major contributors. Even small changes can make a big difference, so this Emory Cares project will offer the entire community a break from everyday stressors and remind everyone that there are simple, accessible ways to relax through engaging their senses. 

This is achieved by offering a variety of affordable, stress-relieving items for each of the five senses—touch, taste, sight, smell, and sound—that anyone can use to find calm and feel more centered. This immersive experience is designed to help people discover what works best for them in a fun and meaningful way.

We are seeking 6 volunteers to help facilitate this project, and all of the Emory Community are welcome to come and join in this stress relieving experience.

Moving in the Spirit is an award-winning creative youth development program that uses dance to teach young people the social, emotional, and cognitive skills they need to thrive. The Holiday Store is an essential part of Moving in the Spirit’s youth development programs. Our 200+ children earn points all year by meeting their responsibilities and personal goals in class. At the Holiday Store, students redeem their hard-earned points to “buy” gifts for their family members and loved ones.

Moving in the Spirit is seeking volunteers over the weekend of Friday, December 13 - Sunday, December 15.  Friday volunteers will be helping organize and set-up the store.  Saturday and Sunday volunteers will be interacting with the students* by acting as personal shoppers; wrapping gifts, serving as “cashiers”; and help set up and clean up the store.   
(* Please note: the Saturday/Sunday volunteers will be required to have a simple background check, since they will be interacting with children)

Parking: Parking is in the MARTA parking deck as room allows. Please pay attention to signage!

KIND of the Upstate is a non-profit organization founded in 2020 to teach young children about disabilities and inclusion of all children. We go into elementary schools in our local communities to teach students in first through third grades. These are called KIND Days. KIND needs help organizing and putting together the KIND Day materials (provided). Please join the Emory Alumni in Greenville to help!
